SAFE RESTART PLAN

June 22, 2020

In order to re-open my practice, the College of Massage Therapists of BC has several requirements that must be met.

One of these requirements is a Restart Plan which details the obligations and responsibilities of both the Therapist and the Patient, and the measures taken to minimize and prevent the spread of the coronavirus which causes Covid-19.

I am trying to keep things as simple and straightforward as possible, however there are more than several requirements to meet and they are frequently being changed and updated. I encourage you to read through the detailed requirements for the CMTBC Interim Guidelines for Return to Practice.

It is important for you to understand that returning for your massage treatments is going to be significantly different than the way it was before. Here is a general outline of what you can expect:

When your appointment is booked, you will receive both a confirmation email and a "Forms" email which contains instructions and links to documents you must complete before you will be permitted to arrive for your treatment. Presently, these include:

Informed Consent form - will be made available for your review and consideration

Coronavirus Pre-screening form - to be completed a day or two before each appointment

Covid-19 Waiver / Release form - to be completed once and before your first appointment

One day before your appointment, you are also required to complete the on-line BC COVID-19 Symptom Self-Assessment  and I am required to call to connect with you personally the day before your appointment to ensure that you have done so. If you have not completed the survey, I am required to reschedule or cancel your appointment.

I am also required to complete the same survey on a daily basis and will cancel appointments if I experience any of the COVID-19 symptoms.

Late cancellation fees will be waived in the event pre-screening excludes you from receiving treatment.

For patients at greater risk, options including additional precautions, alternatives for care, postponing treatment, etc will be discussed.  RMTs may provide massage therapy when the patient and therapist agree that the benefits of care delivery outweigh the risk to the patient.

When you arrive for your appointment, I will be waiting for you at the entrance. You will be required to first clean / disinfect your hands, then put on a mask and we will run through the BC COVID-19 Self-Assessment Tool outcomes again.

Masks - Because it is impossible to maintain a distance of 6 ft from one another, both therapist and patient are required to wear a mask at all times except for when you are lying face-down. You will be provided with a disposable mask at no extra charge upon your arrival.  Bringing your own (cloth) mask to use is discouraged unless it is has been freshly laundered, you have not worn it anywhere else before you arrive and it is clean (untouched without proper protocol). I will discuss PPE (personal protective equipment) options with you in more detail upon your arrival.  Be aware that the virus is not contracted through the skin. It enters the body through your eyes, nose or mouth (mucous membranes) via droplets and/or moisture from your breath. Face shields will also be available for use on request.

Hand hygiene - Reducing the spread of any germs starts with clean hands and keeping them away from your face.  Cough or sneeze into the inside of your elbow or a tissue, not your hands. Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an approved hand sanitizer.  If your hands are visibly soiled, they must first be washed with soap and water, not sanitizer.

Gloves - The virus enters the body through your eyes, nose and mouth, not through your skin, so gloves are not necessary. Gloves are available if you prefer that they be used during your treatment.

Because there are changes to the way your treatment will be done, patients are required to provide new Informed Consent.  This Informed Consent will be one of the forms sent as a link with your appointment confirmation. Please read it over and familiarize yourself with it but do not sign it until we can review it together as it must be signed in person.  This will give you the opportunity to ask any questions so that you fully understand the contents, and either agree to proceed or to decline.  A copy of the signed consent form will be provided if you would like one for your records.

In the treatment room, you will be asked to place your clothes and other belongings into the plastic bin provided and to refrain from touching anything on the walls or desk. The bin will be used to contain the linens used during your treatment and afterward will provide a safe mode of transport to the laundry area where it will be sanitized before coming back into the treatment room.

Payment may be made when you arrive, or after your massage is finished. All receipts and Insurance documents will be emailed to you unless you specifically request a printed copy. I will continue to accept cash, personal cheque, e-transfer and debit.

A Fee Increase has been implemented to help off-set the significant additional time involved with pre-treatment protocols, the cost of required supplies and to bring fees into line with other RMTs in the area.  Fees have always included time for Administration, Assessment, Evaluation, Treatment and Patient Education, not just on-table time.

New Fees Schedule:

30 minutes    $60.00 including GST

45 minutes    $80.00 including GST

60 minutes    $100.00 including GST

90 minutes    $140.00 including GST

There will be only one person permitted in the clinic at one time (except for minors who wish to have a parent/guardian present), so please arrive unaccompanied, and no more than 5 minutes prior to your scheduled time.

It has been recommended that patients not linger before or after their appointment time, and to refrain from exchanging hugs and handshakes.

Enhanced Cleaning and clean Protocols

I have always disinfected anything either a patient or myself has touched in the treatment room, but now a more thorough cleaning/disinfecting of the clinic space (entrance, hallway, washroom, office) will be done before and after your appointment.  A list of the Health Canada Approved cleaning products I use is available upon request.

As always, the massage table is thoroughly cleaned between patients and linens replaced with fresh, clean ones. I encourage you to ask for a disinfecting wipe to use on any surface you would like to wipe down for your own peace of mind. I want you to feel safe and secure at all times, so if there is something that you’re not sure of or uncomfortable with, please let me know right away.

I will continue to use the hot and cold stones and have a heightened disinfecting protocol in place for their use.  If you prefer my not using the stones during your treatment, please let me know.

I have placed touchless trash cans in both the treatment room and washroom.

The treatment room is equipped with an electronic air cleaner with a UV light.

The office is air conditioned, but some days get hotter than others and I will have a portable air conditioning unit for supplemental use when necessary. Please let me know if you have any concerns about my using it during your treatment.

Washroom is available and it will be cleaned/disinfected after each use.

This Restart Plan is subject to change as new and additional information is made available.
